The Science of How Your Brain Really Works.
Studying requires actively engaging our brain.
Recall means to call again. By repeating information verbally we create the memory routine to RECALL it at a later time. We are literally creating a set of physiological/behavioral neural events which we will use later to regenerate the information. Typically visual memories can be recognized. When someone shows us a picture that we have seen before it stimulates the same neural set and we are able to say yes I have seen that before. However, in most instances visual memories cannot be recalled unless they have first been described verbally. What we are recalling is the story that we have told ourselves about the visual experience. That is why talking to ourselves about what we are experiencing is a good way to remember what actually happened. It is also why eyewitness testimony is likely to change the more times we are asked to describe what we have seen . The information can easily be embellished and modified with each telling (rather like the childrens’ game of telephone).
